BVI AIS Live Ship Tracker — Vessel Traffic in the British Virgin Islands

What is AIS?
AIS (Automatic Identification System) s a maritime tracking technology that allows vessels to broadcast their position, speed, course, and identity via VHF radio. Coastguard stations, other vessels, and shore-based receivers like ours pick up these transmissions and display them on a live map. AIS is mandatory for commercial vessels over 300 gross tons and all passenger ships. It is strongly recommended, and increasingly common, on recreational yachts, particularly in busy cruising waters like the BVI.

Cay Electronics BVI AIS Receiver
Cay Electronics operates a shore-based AIS receiver located at Nanny Cay Marina, Tortola. Our receiver covers the Sir Francis Drake Channel, Road Harbour, the North Sound of Virgin Gorda, and surrounding BVI waters. The live map below shows all AIS-equipped vessels currently transmitting within range of our antenna.

Do I need AIS on my yacht in the BVI?
While AIS is not legally required for recreational vessels in the BVI, it significantly improves safety by making your boat visible to commercial shipping, ferries, and other yachts. A Class B AIS transponder is the standard choice for leisure craft.

Cay Electronics supplies and installs Class B AIS transponders from leading manufacturers including Raymarine, Garmin, and Standard Horizon. Installation typically takes half a day and integrates directly with your chart plotter for a seamless display experience.
