Frequently Asked Questions
What marine electronics brands does Cay Electronics carry and install?
Cay Electronics is an authorized dealer and certified installer for all major marine electronics manufacturers, including Raymarine, Garmin, FLIR, Furuno, Victron Energy (reseller) , B&G, Simrad, and Mastervolt. We can special order anything not in stock in our store at Nanny Cay.
Where is Cay Electronics located?
We are based at Nanny Cay Marina, Tortola, British Virgin Islands — one of the BVI's primary refit and service hubs. Our team serves all marinas in Tortola and can travel to Virgin Gorda, as well as the wider Caribbean. We also have a US office at Melville Marine District, One Maritime Drive, Portsmouth, Rhode Island. BVI phone: +1 (284) 494-2400. US phone: (401) 683-3520.
How long does a full marine electronics refit take?
A full refit, including new chart plotters, radar, AIS, VHF, solar, and battery systems, typically takes between 3 and 10 days depending on the scope and vessel size. We provide a detailed quote and project timeline before any work begins, and we supply a full schematic of everything installed with unlimited revisions.
Can you install Starlink on my boat in the BVI?
Yes. Cay Electronics installs and configures Starlink Maritime for yachts and powerboats throughout the BVI. We handle the mounting, cable runs, power integration, and network configuration so you have reliable offshore internet connectivity. We can also integrate Starlink with your existing onboard network and chart plotter systems.
Do you service superyachts in the BVI?
Yes. Cay Electronics regularly works on superyachts transiting and based in the BVI. Our team is trained in Coastal monitoring software and VTS radar sensor technology, and we have experience with complex multi-system integrations typical of larger vessels. Contact us to discuss your vessel's specific requirements.
Do you handle warranty claims for faulty marine electronics?
Yes. We can manage the entire warranty process on your behalf for most of our suppliers. Rather than navigating manufacturer claims yourself, we handle the paperwork, communicate with the supplier, and can have a replacement unit shipped to our BVI address. Note that on-board warranty (which may cover labour costs) is only valid when equipment has been installed by certified technicians — which our team are.
Can you help with lithium-ion battery changeovers?
Absolutely. Lithium battery system upgrades are one of our most requested services. We design safe, properly fused and monitored lithium systems to ABYC standards, compatible with your existing Victron or other battery management infrastructure. We carry Victron and EPOCH LiFePO4 batteries in stock in the BVI. A proper system design is critical for safety; we provide full schematics and can integrate solar charging, shore power, and generator inputs.
What is an AIS transponder and do I need one in the BVI?
AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a radio transponder that broadcasts your vessel's position, course, and identity to other ships and coastal authorities. In the BVI, AIS is strongly recommended and required for commercial vessels. Cay Electronics supplies and installs Class B AIS transponders for recreational yachts and Class A units for commercial vessels. We also operate a local AIS receiver, you can view vessel traffic in BVI waters on our website's AIS page.
Do you install FLIR thermal cameras on boats?
Yes. We are experienced installers of the FLIR M-Series and other FLIR maritime thermal cameras, including the FLIR M300 Series for advanced situational awareness. Thermal cameras significantly improve night navigation, man-overboard detection, and security monitoring. We integrate FLIR cameras with your Raymarine, B&G, Simrad, Furuno or Garmin chart plotter for a seamless multi-function display experience.
How much does marine electronics installation cost in the BVI?
Costs vary widely depending on the equipment and scope of work. As an authorized dealer, Cay Electronics supplies equipment at competitive prices with BVI freight and duty included — often making us comparable to or cheaper than ordering equipment abroad and paying separate shipping and import costs. Lithium batteries and associated equipment are imported duty-free to the BVI. We provide written quotes for all projects before work commences. Contact us with your vessel type and wish list for a free estimate.
Can you troubleshoot and repair existing electronics that aren't working?
Yes. Repairs and troubleshooting are a core part of our service. Our technicians carry an extensive range of test equipment to efficiently diagnose faults, which saves you time and money compared to unnecessary part replacements. We service a wide range of brands and systems. If you are experiencing navigation, communication, electrical, or other electronics issues on your vessel in the BVI, contact us to schedule a diagnostic visit.
Do you offer radar installation and can you recommend the right radar for my vessel?
Yes. We install radar systems from Raymarine (including the Quantum 2 Doppler solid-state radar), Garmin, B&G/Simrad and Furuno. The right radar depends on your vessel size, typical range of travel, integration requirements, and budget. The Raymarine Quantum 2 is popular with yacht owners for its compact size, wireless connectivity, and excellent target separation. We will recommend the best option for your specific use case during a free pre-installation consultation.
